UPI (Unified Payments Interface) is the Indian instant-payments rail, operated by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI)1 . Launched 2016, UPI is now the dominant Indian payment method by transaction count, with over 10 billion transactions per month at time of writing2 . For Indian casino players at offshore operators that integrate UPI, it is the operationally smoothest fiat rail available, mirroring Pix’s role for Brazilian players.
The UPI ID and VPA model
UPI uses Virtual Payment Addresses (VPAs), username-like identifiers (e.g. yourname@okicici, yourname@paytm), to route payments without exposing bank account numbers. The flow:
- The casino cashier displays its VPA or generates a UPI QR code
- You open your UPI app (PhonePe, Google Pay India, Paytm, BHIM, your bank’s app)
- You enter the VPA or scan the QR
- You authorise with UPI PIN
- The deposit lands in your casino account within a second
For withdrawals, you provide your VPA and the operator pushes funds to it.
The Indian regulatory context
Indian gambling law is state-by-state: some states permit online gambling under specific licensing frameworks (Sikkim, Nagaland, Meghalaya have issued licences), while most others have unclear or restrictive legal positions. Offshore operators serving Indian residents operate outside the state-licensed frameworks where they exist.
Practical implications for UPI at offshore casinos:
- Indian banks may block UPI transactions identified as going to gambling merchants. The block rate varies by bank and over time
- NPCI has historically restricted specific gambling-related VPAs but enforcement is uneven
- Operators integrate UPI carefully, often through intermediary payment processors that obscure the gambling-merchant identification
This means UPI availability at offshore casinos is more variable than Pix in Brazil. Some Indian players find UPI working seamlessly; others find their bank declining UPI transactions to specific operators.
Casinos in our coverage accepting UPI
Bombay.vip is geographically positioned for Indian players and is the most likely UPI accepter in our coverage. Other operators may support UPI through specific payment processors; verify on the live cashier.
For Indian players where UPI is blocked at their bank, alternative routes include AstroPay (which has Indian funding integrations) or crypto rails (USDT TRC-20 acquired via Indian crypto exchanges).
Frequently asked questions
How fast is a UPI casino deposit?
Sub-second once you authorise with UPI PIN. The deposit is effectively instant. Operator-side processing may add a few seconds.
Will my Indian bank block UPI to a gambling site?
Some banks do, with variable enforcement. NPCI has historically restricted specific VPAs identified as gambling merchants. Operators sometimes route through payment processors to obscure the merchant identification.
Is UPI legal to use for offshore casino deposits in India?
Gambling law in India is state-by-state and the offshore-casino legal position is complex. We do not provide legal advice. Read your state's current position and check the operator's terms before depositing.
Can I withdraw casino winnings to UPI?
Yes at operators that accept UPI deposits and have outbound UPI capability. Withdrawal speed mirrors deposit: sub-second to your Indian bank via VPA.
Are there UPI transaction limits?
Per-transaction limits vary by bank, typically Rs 1 lakh (~$1,200 USD) per transaction. Daily totals may be capped. Check your bank's UPI policy for specifics.
